You might not think of applesauce as being one of those things you need to make. I mean, Mott’s has a pretty good handle on the market right? But I’m hear to tell you, as someone who has made 4 batches in 2 weeks, Mott’s ain’t got nothin’ on me. No kidding, I’m eating a small bowl of homemade applesauce right now, fresh out of the slow cooker, as a late night snack! I’m calling it “5-Ingredient Slow Cooker Cinnamon Applesauce” but to be honest I don’t even think water and salt technically count as ingredients. So it’s really 3 ingredients and no added sugar. You heard me. NO. ADDED. SUGAR. And it tastes like it was kissed by angels. (That’s a thing right?) So yes, you DO need to make applesauce when angels are involved. But first, a little back story.
We go apple picking every fall up here in the northeast and this year our haul was preeeeeeetty substantial. Like “What in the hell can we make that uses a lot of apples at once?!” So I talked to Little R’s teachers and we arranged an in-class cooking sesh with her 1st grade class. The kids were so enthusiastic about cooking and they jumped right in. They peeled the apples and used an apple slicer (like THIS) to cut them up. The kids took turns adding the lemon juice and salt and cinnamon and vanilla extract. We ended up making a quadruple batch, split between 2 slow cookers. YO. I don’t know if it was because they helped make it or because it was freaking delicious, but those kids INHALED the applesauce. Like it was gone by the end of day. It was such a big hit that Little R requested we bring in a batch to her end-of-year class breakfast this past week. Sure enough the container was empty by the time the breakfast was over…
Add a big scoop to a jar of overnight oats. Stir some into a warm bowl of oatmeal. Top a thick slice of toasted banana bread with a dollop. Or do what I do and warm up a bowl for an after dinner treat. This 5-Ingredient Slow Cooker Cinnamon Applesauce is so easy kids can make it and so delicious it’ll become an instant hit in your kitchen. Make a batch and watch it disappear!
In other news I’m getting ready to pack up the kids and head back to the Midwest for some summer fun in the Kansas heat! I’ll keep ya up on Instagram but the blog will be pretty quiet until July. Happy summer y’all!
